“Damn good boats, them Tancook whalers…” Ernest A. Bell, Yachting Magazine 1933
One of the newest arrivals in the NSSA fleet, Son-of-a-gun is a traditional whaler design of the Tancook variety. She is a replica of a schooner located ashore at Middle River which was believed to have been built in 1905. The owner and builder, David Westergard found details in Howard Chapelle’s Small Sailing Craft and at the Smithsonian.
Son-of-a-gun is 40-6 on deck and has a beam of 10 feet. She is bronze fastened and hull of Yarmouth County timber.
After one season of racing with the NSSA, Son-of-a-gun has her name on a trophy.
David sold Son of a Gun in 2004 and she now lives in the Magdalen Islands.
SON-OF-A-GUN……. What a schooner….!
