The schooner Renegade was purchased in 1980 by Doug Hickman from Fred Rhinelander on the Gold River in Chester, N.S. and sailed to her new homeport of Saint John. She became a well-known sight in the St. John River and Bay of Fundy. She has been as far west as Portland, Maine and has spent a considerable amount of time on the St. John River. Since 1980, Doug has made many upgrades (too many to mention). A stove was also installed for much-needed heat on foggy days and this year a new teak cabin sole was installed. Since 1980, her captain has married and there is now a first mate (Claire) and two boys, Greg, 9 and Josh, 6, to help sail her. The summer of 1999 saw a sailing season start in early June and which included sailing for two weeks in the Bay of Fundy. Renegade sails well into September and has seen many Thanksgivings on the St. John River. Renegade is 36 feet on deck and 42 feet overall. Her beam is 10 feet, six inches and she draws five feet. Her engine is a Westerbeke 21. This will be Renegade's first trip back to the south shore of Nova Scotia since her purchase.
