The Schooner RENCONTRE was a dream of Roswell Conrad, age 79. Construction was started in his shed at First South near Lunenburg in 1991. Four years later at age 83 and in failing health he decided to sell the hull. Capt. Doug Himmelman, my broker at large informed me of the hull for sale and the rest as they say is history. I bought the hull in 1995. Boat builder Bill Lutwick won the tender to finish the schooner and we hauled it from First South to Indian Point in February. The schooner was launched July 16th. 1995. RENCONTRE (which is French for “meeting place”) departed Lutwick Boat Building Yard July 24th at 1000h for the start line off East Ironbound Island for a race to Halifax.
RENCONTRE has won races competing with other schooners at NSSA race week.
July 1998 - Olands Tray
July 1998 - Old Gaffers Trophy
July 1999 - Olands Tray
Colonel Edward Cornwallis Trophy
The RENCONTRE is a smart looking schooner sailing faster each year.
