Her History - what's in a name?
In 1999 we became the proud owners of "Peers' Fancy". When vessels change hands the name too is often changed, but out of sheer respect for her sailing history and the family who sailed her, we decided to keep the name. With the Peer family, the schooner visited many beautiful places - from the sometimes challenging Bay of Fundy to the Saint John River, the family's home waters. In 1978 "Peers' Fancy" made her first crossing to Cape Cod. Much coastal cruising ensued. From Cape Breton to many voyages back to the St. John River to summer with family. Those early passages hold many memories of harbours, coves, and people, and as the Peers' came to realize years later after much international cruising on their fine schooner, the Maritimes proved to be home to the best cruising they were to find anywhere.
In her marvelous life to date, "Peers' Fancy" has traveled far. In 1985 she made a passage to Bermuda with a return along the Maine coast. The following years were spent preparing for a trans-Atlantic voyage: A trip of over two years that would take Don and Dorothy Peer from their home in Hubbards to the Azores, Gibraltar, into the Med where they over-wintered in Greece visiting ports in Turkey, Malta, Sicily and Tunisia. From there, they made for the Caribbean in time for Christmas in Antigua. After this, the Bahamas and eventually back to her Nova Scotian home.
As her new caretakers we are always mindful and grateful for all our little schooner has achieved. The coastal cruising tradition continues during our trick at the helm. There have been passages to Cape Cod and the coast of Maine as well as participation in "Tall Ships" events. In the summer of 2006 our schooner visited the southwest coast of Newfoundland via St. Pierre-Miquelon and the Bras D'or lakes.
We love sharing our vessel, passing on her legacy and further enhancing an already impressive career.
