Membership Categories.

What does a Membership entitle you to?

  • Subscription to The “Scoon”, the NSSA’s newsletter.
    • There are at least two editions per year.
  • A chance to meet and interact with like-minded individuals who support the philosophies and values of the NSSA.
  • Plus:

Member in good standing.
A member in good standing is a Full or Senior Member whose membership dues, registration fees etc are fully paid up to date

Charter Member.
A Charter Member is one who was a participant at the founding of the Association on July 25th.1961 aboard the schooner “Adair” in Hubbard’s Cove, Nova Scotia.
These memberships cannot be transferred.
These people have the same rights and privileges that they would enjoy as full or senior members.
They are considered as members for life and for them all dues are waived.

Life Member.
A Life Member is a member in good standing who, in recognition of exemplary service to the Association for many years, has been awarded this status by majority vote at a Nova Scotia Schooner Association Meeting.
He/she will have satisfied certain strict criteria in order to be awarded this status. He/she is given a presentation certificate and membership card announcing life membership status.
These members have the same rights and privileges that they would enjoy as full or senior members but for them, all membership dues are waived for life.

Senior Member.
(Must be a member in good standing).
A Senior Member is a person who is over eighteen years of age and is a schooner owner. (There can be only one senior member per boat.)
This person is urged to attend and participate at all general meetings and has full voting rights for all items regarding the operation and evolution of the Association.
In the event that he/she is unable to attend a meeting, he/she has the right to assign his/her proxy vote, in writing, to any NSSA card holding member.
This membership is accorded to him/her for the princely sum of $30.00/year.

Full Member.
(Must be a member in good standing).
The Full Member is a person who is over eighteen years of age and is not a schooner owner. He/she may or may not be a crew member but has the desire to support and be a part of the Association.
This person is welcome to participate in any way that he/she wishes.
These members are urged to attend all general meetings and are welcome to participate in any discussion before a vote is taken on any issue.
This membership brings with it voting rights on all matters
except constitutional issues and decisions regarding potential racing or cruising venues.
In the event that he/she is unable to attend a meeting, he/she has the right to assign his/her proxy vote, in writing, to any NSSA card holding member.
The fee for this membership is $25.00/year. You can pay this membership fee through

Complimentary Members.
Complimentary/Associate membership. This is a way in which the association recognises certain individuals for occasional service or support.(Certain sponsors for example.) Such people have no formal rights but are welcome to participate in sailing events at the invitation of individual senior members. They may also be invited to attend and participate in meetings at the discretion of the executive officers of the Association. They have no voting rights.
